Unlocking new possibilities with the ‘three-in-one’ Iridium 9604
Now commercially available, the Iridium 9604 is a new modem type that combines Iridium’s proven Short Burst Data® (SBD®) satellite communications, LTE Cat M1 cellular, and integrated GNSS positioning in a single, compact module.
The 9604 is ultra miniature, allowing for easier concealment. It also paves the way for new possibilities such as combined cellular LTE Cat M1 and Iridium in an ultra-miniature device.
Designed with form factor compatibility to the u-blox SARA-R5 dual LTE Cat M1 /NB2 cellular modem and an M10 GNSS engine (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, Beidou, QZSS and SBAS), the 9604 brings Iridium SBD capability to the same form factor whilst retaining cellular LTE CAT M1 functionality and GNSS positioning capability.

Engineered to support a wide range of IoT applications, it delivers dependable, seamless connectivity across both cellular and satellite networks. LTE Cat M1 offers the benefits of modern LTE networks supporting reasonable data rates for asset tracking and M2M application with a minimal form factor and power consumption.
Iridium’s polar orbit Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation of satellites and its SBD service continues to provide low latency data communication, matching the LTE Cat M1 module well to provide a similar service for out of cellular coverage operations.
Some of the benefits of this simplified integration
- With the u-blox Sara form factor constraining the modem to 16 × 26 × 2.4 mm, the 9604 modem represents less than 50% of the footprint and less than a staggering 20% of the volume of the previous Iridium 9603 SBD only modem
- It has a shared antenna architecture, dual RF ports for Iridium/GNSS and LTE, and unified power management for streamlined RF design
